# Shave Down Services

## When Is a Shave Down Necessary for Your Pet?

### Understanding When a Fresh Start Is the Healthiest Choice

There are few grooming decisions that spark more questions than whether a dog should receive a shave down. Many pet owners worry they'll be "taking too much off" or wonder if shaving is ever truly necessary. The answer depends on your pet's breed, coat condition, health, and lifestyle. We always prioritize your pet's health, comfort, and well-being. While preserving a healthy coat is usually our goal, there are situations where a shave down is the safest and most humane option.

### What is Shave Down?

A shave down is the process of clipping a pet's coat much shorter than a standard trim to remove excessive matting, damaged fur, or heavy overgrowth. The goal isn't simply to make your pet look different—it's to improve comfort, hygiene, and overall health.Every shave down is customized based on your pet's coat type, skin condition, and individual needs.

### When is Shave Down Recommended?

 Severe Matting

 Poor Coat Maintenance

 Medical Reasons

 Elderly Pets

 Extremely Dirty or Contaminated Coats

One of the most common reasons for a shave down is severe matting.

Mats don't just affect appearance—they can become painful. Tight mats pull on the skin with every movement, reducing air circulation and trapping moisture, dirt, bacteria, and parasites.

Severe matting can lead to:

- Skin irritation
- Pressure sores
- Hot spots
- Infections
- Restricted movement
- Pain when walking or lying down

In many cases, brushing out heavy mats would cause unnecessary pain. A shave down is often the safest and most compassionate solution.

Dogs with continuously growing coats require regular grooming.

Breeds like:

- Goldendoodles
- Labradoodles
- Poodles
- Shih Tzus
- Maltese
- Yorkshire Terriers
- Havanese
- Bichon Frises

can quickly develop tangled coats if grooming appointments are missed.

If brushing is no longer effective, starting over with a shave down allows the coat to regrow healthy and manageable.

ometimes a veterinarian may recommend shaving portions of the coat or performing a complete shave down for medical reasons.

Examples include:

- Skin infections
- Surgery recovery
- Wound treatment
- Hot spots
- Severe flea infestations
- Allergic skin disease
- Certain dermatological conditions

Always follow your veterinarian's recommendations when medical treatment is involved.

---

Senior dogs often struggle to groom themselves or tolerate lengthy brushing sessions.

As mobility decreases, coats may become neglected despite an owner's best efforts.

A shorter coat can help:

- Keep seniors cleaner
- Reduce discomfort
- Make home maintenance easier
- Improve overall quality of life

Occasionally pets become coated in substances that are difficul or unsafe to remove by washing alone.

Examples include:

- Oil
- Paint
- Sap
- Tar
- Heavy mud
- Feces
- Burrs and plant debris

Depending on the situation, shaving may be the safest option.

## Pet Shave Downs FAQ

Is Shaving Good for Every Breed?

No.Many double-coated breeds should not be shaved unless medically necessary. Some breeds have a protective undercoat that helps regulate body temperature throughout the year. Shaving these coats unnecessarily may:damage coat regrowth, affect natural insulation, increase sunburn risk, alter coat texture permanently, and more. For these breeds, professional de-shedding treatments are often a better alternative.

How Often Should a Pet Receive a Shave Down?

A shave down should not become your pet's regular grooming routine unless medically necessary.Instead, most pets benefit from:Regular brushing at home, professional grooming every 4–8 weeks, routine bathing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, consistent maintenance prevents mats from developing and keeps your pet comfortable year-round.

Our Approach to Shave Downs

At Premier Pet Services, we evaluate every pet individually before recommending a shave down. Our goal is never to remove more coat than necessary. We carefully assess: coat condition, skin health, breed, age, lifestyle, temperament. If brushing can safely save the coat, we'll discuss that option with you. If shaving is the safest solution, we'll explain why and answer any questions before we begin.Your pet's comfort and welfare always come first.

Is a shave down painful?

No. The shaving process itself is not painful. However, pets with severe matting may have sensitive skin underneath, which is why gentle handling is so important.

Will my dog's hair grow back?

Most dogs experience normal coat regrowth, although it may vary depending on breed, age, and overall health.

Can all dogs be shaved?

No. Double-coated breeds generally should not be shaved unless recommended by a veterinarian or necessary due to severe matting or medical conditions.
